Supplements That Can Trigger Breakouts in High Doses:

Biotin: Often marketed for hair, skin, and nails – but high doses (anything over 1000mcg daily) can trigger cystic acne in some people. Biotin competes with vitamin B5 for absorption, and B5 is critical for regulating oil production. Too much biotin = not enough B5 = more breakouts.

B12: High doses (especially from injections or those 5000mcg sublingual tablets) can trigger acne in people who are sensitive. Additionally, B12 changes the activity of skin bacteria, which can lead to inflammatory breakouts.

Vitamin D: While deficiency causes problems, taking mega-doses (10,000+ IU daily without monitoring your levels) can throw off your calcium metabolism and trigger inflammation. More importantly, it can create imbalances with other fat-soluble vitamins.

Zinc: This one’s tricky because zinc is amazing for skin – but too much (over 40mg elemental zinc daily) can deplete copper, which then triggers skin issues. Moreover, excessive zinc can cause nausea and actually suppress your immune system instead of supporting it.

Iodine: Often included in multivitamins and thyroid supplements, but high doses can directly trigger acne. If you have thyroid issues, you need iodine – but the dose matters tremendously.

This is why I’m so specific about dosages in my recommendations. It’s not just about taking supplements – it’s about taking the RIGHT amounts that support your skin without overwhelming your system.
